They say that for each person, there’s only one true love. One person that will always be deepest in your heart, always and forever. A friend, a lover, a parent, a grandparent — it doesn’t matter what their relationship is to you — they are The One.

For me, that person is Jason. He is the centre of my world, and always will be, whatever he does. I love him for so many reasons. For his strength of character, his sensitivity, his values. The fact that he shows his emotions without shame, his inability to lie, his vulnerability. His openness and generosity. His innate qualities, if you like — the things that come naturally to him.

Of course, nobody is perfect. Everyone is flawed to a greater or lesser degree. Jason is loyal to a fault, for example, which he’s demonstrated many times over Carl. He’s easily influenced, too soft, too generous. Stubborn, oh yes.

But for me, these flaws are far outshone by his strengths. I don’t believe these things are learned: either the strengths or the weaknesses. I think a person is born with certain characteristics, and they form the essence of that individual. Whatever life throws at him, Jason keeps those qualities intact.

That’s why my “One” is Jason.
